Three buried in Kashmir avalanche, one rescued
Monday, January 12, 2009 15:31 [IST]

Srinagar: Three villagers were buried in a snow avalanche in north Kashmir Monday, the police said.

According to the police, the avalanche struck Chotali village near the border town of Uri, around 85 km from here.

"Three persons in Chotali village were buried under the avalanche," a police officer told IANS.

"Rescue teams of the police and army were immediately rushed to the spot. One person has been rescued from under the avalanche while efforts are on to save two more still buried under," the police officer said.

Although this winter so far there has not been a major snowfall in the Kashmir Valley, the upper reaches have been receiving intermittent moderate to heavy snowfall this season.
