Probe political connections of Satyam: BJP
Monday, January 12, 2009 20:12 [IST]

New Delhi: The BJP today demanded a "free and fair" inquiry into the "political patronage" allegedly extended to scam-tainted Satyam Computers, accusing the Congress government in Andhra Pradesh of having alloted several contracts in "favourable terms".

"We demand that the political connections and political patrons of Satyam be investigated. The contracts for Hyderabad Metro given to Maytas (sister concern of Satyam) in most favourable terms should be investigated. It is a serious matter," BJP spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad said here. He accused the Congress government of favouring Satyam for the last four-and-a-half years and awarding several contracts relating to power, irrigation and infrastructure.

"How many contracts have been given to sister concerns of Satyam should be investigated," Prasad said, while accusing Chief Minister Y Rajashekhara Reddy of playing "Godfather" to Satyam' s disgraced founder Ramalinga Raju. There have been reports that Raju and his family members have been close to Reddy and TDP leader N Chandrababu Naidu. Prasad said a free and fair inquiry should be conducted into the whole scam. However, he refused to name any agency or organisation that should conduct the investigations. "We don't want parallel investigations by CID, SEBI and others as prestige of India internationally is involved," Prasad said.
