Imphal: The restoration work of Kangla Fort, from where Manipuri kings -- Meidingus -- had ruled an independent kingdom for some 2000 years, would be resumed by the archeology department of the state government.
The fort, located in the heart of the capital complex here, include palaces, buildings and places of worship which were destroyed by the British when they subjugated the erstwhile kingdom after the Anglo-Manipuri war in 1891 at Khongjom in present state's Thoubal district.
"We are trying to restore the old structural look of Kangla and it is expected to be completed by 2015," said Superintendent of the Archeology Department S Bheigyachandra.
Reconstruction of Kangla began in the end of 2005 under the Concept Development Plan (CDP) formulated by well-known Delhi-based professor and architect Nalini Thakur.
The CDP is estimated at about Rs five crore, department sources said.
Bheigyachandra said the work of CDP, which was to take about 10 years from 2005,was hindered for some time because scholars gave different views on buildings inside the fort and the department had to collect many important documents to find out the correct positions.
