Cambridge to focus on student support
Tuesday, January 13, 2009 13:59 [IST]

New Delhi: As the University of Cambridge gets ready to launch its 800th anniversary celebrations, the prestigious varsity has said it will focus more on giving admissions to meritorious students from economically backward families.

The university, set up in 1209,started its 800th anniversary campaign in 2005 to raise funds for spending in the areas of innovation, conservation, support for students and academics.

"The purpose is that not a single meritorious student should be denied education at Cambridge because he is poor. We will follow needs-blind admission. We will also support the academics so that we get the best faculty.

As it has been our legacy, we will take forward our works in the areas of innovations," William H Janway, co-chairman for the 800th anniversary campaign, told PTI here.

The university started the fund raising campaign in 2005 with an aim to raise one billion pound by 2012. It has so far raised 800 million pound from various sources like aluminas and other foundations. About two third of the money has come from the UK itself while the rest has come from the other countries, Janway, who was here on a visit, said.

He said the university would support the students by providing more scholarships at both post-graduate and under-graduate levels.

The university will also spend money on areas of innovation by augmenting activities in research and development.
