Burdwan: Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee today donated medical equipment to a rural health centre at Galsi in Burdwan district of West Bengal.
The veteran parliamentarian's wife Nilima Chatterjee had received the initial treatment at the block health centre when she fell ill on way to Kolkata from Bolpur on November 25.
As the attending staff at the health centre, lacking basic facilities, battled to stabilise her condition, Chatterjee assured the Block Medical Officer for Health Dr Shyamal Baran Biswas of all possible assistance to equip the centre and help people in the remote area.
The Lok Sabha MP from Bolpur today donated a generator set for 24x7 power connection to store life saving medicines in a cooler, an ultra-modern ECG machine and a glucometre as the health centre has to cope with emergency cases.
The equipment cost around Rs 2.5-3 lakh and was donated by Chatterjee's family, the BMOH said.
Local MP Nikhilananda Sar, Chief Medical Officer of Health Abu Ershad and others were present.
Chatterjee, however, did not talk about his contribution to the mediapersons present. Source : PTI
