Kashmir unrest, Marriages cancelled

Srinagar: Unrest in the Kashmir valley sparked by the death of two women in Shopian has taken a toll on weddings with many of them being postponed at the last minute. Over hundred families have cancelled marriage ceremonies and lavish parties after the protests led by the Hurriyat has halted life across the valley.

Mir Mohammad Farooq of Lalbazaar area is among those who has cancelled the marriage ceremony of his daughter due to the ongoing unrest. "I have cancelled my daughter's marriage ceremony scheduled on June seven due to situation in the city," he
said, adding the family had been preparing for the celebrations for the last one month.

Farooq said he has already given the advance to chefs and butchers for preparing the feast. Local dailies are flooded with advertisements, carrying cancellation of marriage ceremonies and invitations. Some of the families are even using cable networks for such
announcements.

A whole page of two leading newspapers were today devoted to the cancellation of invitations. The messages cited "undeclared curfew and shutdowns as reasons for cancellation of marriage ceremonies".

However, Dilsoz colony's Ghulam Mohammad Bhat whose daughter got married on Sunday feels himself lucky that the ceremony was held peacefully. His daughter had a miraculous escape yesterday when she was caught in a clash between stone pelting youths and police in the region.

"She was going to her in-laws house when the wind screen of her vehicle was smashed in the stone pelting and she had a miraculous escape," Bhat said. Abdul Majid Wani, whose brother will tie nuptial knot later on Friday, said the invitations have been cancelled but marriage will take place as per the schedule.

In the prevailing situation, religious clerics have asked people to hold marriage ceremonies without much extravagance. "We are supposed to celebrate weddings with simplicity even during normalcy. Now it is good to see that people are cancelling lavish parties," a local cleric Moulvi Akbar said.
