On a tip-off from a college student, Anti Narcotics Cell (ANC) officials nabbed the two youngsters who had cocaine in their possession and detained seven others for allegedly consuming drugs on Tuesday evening.
The arrested youths have been identified as Faizan Shaikh (23) and Mohit Ramchandani (23), both residents of Colaba. Two grams cocaine was found on each of them.
"Shaikh's family owns a hotel in South Mumbai while Ramchandani's father runs a factory. Seven other youngsters who were detained for allegedly consuming drugs are also from rich families staying South Mumbai," said a senior ANC official.
ANC officials had received a tip-off that youngsters consume drugs in areas near Bhavans College and Girgaum chowpatty. On Tuesday, ANC officials saw nine youngsters sitting in a parked car in a lane near Bhavans College. They saw them snorting something. Four of them, including Shaikh and Ramchandani, were sitting inside the car while five others were sitting on a pavement near it.
Police inspector Mrityunjay Hiremath said, "We rushed to the car and frisked the youngsters. Shaikh and Ramchandani had small packets of cocaine while a close observation hinted that they had also consumed drugs. Shaikh and Ramchandani are college dropouts. During interrogation, Ramchandani said that he had got the drug from a peddler who is a Nigerian national. We are tracing his whereabouts and will nab him soon."
The detained youngsters are students of leading colleges in South Mumbai and are studying in undergraduate courses. One amongst them is doing MBA from a reputed institution.
In another case, ANC officials nabbed a person named Ganesh Gaikwad (40), who provides extras and small-time actors for Bollywood, with 17 grams of cocaine from Behrambaug in Jogeshwari.
ANC conducts awareness campaigns against drug abuse in colleges across the city.
