Al Qaeda group claims rocket fire on Israel

al_queda_443Beirut: A group linked to Al Qaeda claimed Thursday to have fired a Katusha rocket from southern Lebanon into northern Israel without causing any damage.

The Brigades of Abdullah Azzam, Ziad Jarrah s Battalion, said it was responsible for Tuesday's attack, according to a statement released by a site close to al Qaeda called al-Fajr.

The group said it had prepared to launch five rockets but only fired one. It said the attack was in protest of a Sunday raid by Israeli police on Jerusalem s al-Aqsa Mosque.

"The occupying Jews have repeatedly raided the courtyard of al-Aqsa Mosque. ... In response to this aggression ... The Battalion of Ziad Jarrah" fired the Katyusha, it said.

Abdullah Azzam, mentor of Al Qaeda deputy chief Ayman al-Zawahiri, was killed in a 1989 bomb blast. Ziad Jarrah was one of the hijacking pilots in the Sep 11,2001,suicide strikes against New York and Washington.
