Lead crime: Home-alone teacher found murdered


A 55-year-old school headmistress was found murdered at her house in Hampinagar on Monday morning.

Police were suspecting that the woman, Umadevi, was murdered on Sunday night. The incident came to light when a suspicious milkman informed her neighbours on Monday.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the victim was hit with iron rods. The body was found face-down in the kitchen. Police were investigating a motive.
Umadevi, heading a government primary school in Nandini Layout, was reportedly alone at her home on Sunday. Her husband, N Shiva Rudraiah, also a teacher, had gone to invite relatives and friends to his niece's wedding. He had left their home on Saturday.

The milkman, whose identity was not revealed, grew suspicious after he received no response to repeated knocks even though the main door of the house was open. He entered the house and found drops of blood on the floor. Subsequently, he informed the neighbours and left the place, police said.

One of the neighbours found a mobile phone in the house and rang up a number, he had found in the 'dialled numbers' list. Police said the number belonged to the victim's niece, Bangarpet resident Manjula. She informed her cousins living in the city, who arrived at the scene and informed the police around 9.30 am. Umadevi hailed from Bangarpet in Kolar district.

Besides the police, the dog squad, finger prints experts and officials of the forensic science laboratory also evidence from the scene. Police said a complaint was registered following a complaint by Renukaradhya, the victim's relative.

The police interrogated the victim's relatives, including the husband. The body was later handed over to the relatives after a post-mortem examination at the Victoria Hospital.

According to Jayaprakash, another relative, the couple had been in Hampinagar since 1983, and they never had any rivalry with anybody. The couple was issueless.
