Media overplayed the incident which also exposed cops' lack of sensitivity
Police were doing their job when they questioned Rasool

We should be highlighting neither the security problem nor individual freedom. One has to take a balanced view. Police questioned J&K cricketer Parvez Rasool because there was a security problem. But they should have avoided his day-long detention. The forensic lab report proves Rasool was innocent.

The equipment used by police authorities in such searches must be sophisticated and fool proof. Police personnel should be trained in handling them. They should have acted responsibly as the career of a cricketer could be affected by such acts. So they should more careful next time.

Police were only doing their job when they questioned Rasool. But they could have handled the issue more carefully as the cricketer came from Jammu and Kashmir. Media also unnecessarily played up the incident. Had there been terror links, the same media would have hailed the police.

The intention of the police was good. They were concerned about the safety of the players and spectators in the stadium. But the outcome was unfortunate. There is no point in playing the blame game. The incident could serve as a lesson for the city police.

Police acted in the best interests of the public as they feared a threat to their safety. But they failed to note that such detention could upset the career of a promising player and hurt the feelings of his family back home. They should have handled the situation better.

It's pointless to blame the police. They were just doing their duty. That the bomb detector gave the wrong signals is not their fault. Had they ignored the beep and a bomb gone off killing or maiming people, how would the media have reacted?
