Tata submits bid for VSNL stakes

April 10, 2001 18:07 Hrs (IST)

Bombay: India's Tata business group bid on Tuesday for a 25 per cent stake in the state-owned overseas telecom monopoly, Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited (VSNL).

“We have submitted a bid,” a Tata group spokeswoman told a news agency, but declined to give details.

Tuesday was the deadline for submission of “expressions of interest” for the stake in VSNL, which is India's largest Internet service provider and has a monopoly on overseas telephone calls.

Reports said that Reliance Industries, Essar, BPL and Bharti Enterprises-Singapore Telecom were some of the other companies bidding for the stake.
