The Miss World 2002 contest received a lot of media hype for the wrong reasons. Originally scheduled to be held in Lagos, Nigeria, the event had to be shifted to London after a protest against the pageant dubbing it as immodest and offensive degenerated into large-scale rioting. It is estimated that nearly 200 people were left dead in Nigeria. The organiser of the event Julia Morsley then moved the pageant to London.
