The country celebrated its 55th Independence Day on August 15, 2002. For Dr A
P J Abdul Kalam this was the first Independence Day celebration as the President
of India. The day was marked with parades at capital New Delhi – where Prime
Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee addressed the nation from Red Fort, and the state
