Indian varsities should re-orient higher education
By Amod Karve
I often wonder why many Indian scholars opt for foreign universities when it comes to higher studies. Now the answer stares right at me in the eye.
Barring the premier institutions of the country, higher education in India is mostly academic in nature. It has very little correspondence with the latest happening in the Industry. This has caused students to lay very less emphasis on higher studies in India. Although a degree is required to get a job, what you learn in the degree is not all that important.
So what have institutions abroad got that attract the students (other than going to a new place)? The institutions abroad focus more on practical studies. They are more practical in nature where there is no easy way out.
I believe that to really become a strong horse in the new economy Indian universities need to reconsider their approach. They need to focus more on practical studies.
A good example could be taking up research studies, which are closely related to the industry.
This will invoke the interest of industry as well and the universities could look towards the industry for funding. There will be mutual benefit for all involved.
Universities will get grants from the industry and the industry in turn will receive useful research at a much cheaper price from the universities. And the country as such will definitely prosper, at least in terms of education.
These are just some thoughts I wanted to share.
