The FDI in print media at one level could mean that smaller newspapers that have lost out on
marketing would have a good chance to revamp their look and form a larger base. It could
also mean that already successful newspapers need to gear up
for some tough competition. This is true especially of those newspapers that
have more or less gained a sort of monopoly in the market.
The FDI could also good news for journalists, who for long have been battling
for higher pays. The FDI definitely means more choice for the consumer.
The reason for the Indian government having reservations in allowing foreign
newspapers to enter has been the fear of misrepresentation of the country
abroad. This issue is in the front right now with the 'Time' article about
our Prime Minister.
While many argue that we need a more "protectionist" policy in at least a few
fields, others welcome the idea for the sake of good finances.
Like every other case of globalisation, here too it would mean the survival
of the fittest. Many newspapers, especially the smaller ones may have to go
with new entrants with more money to spare and more aggressive strategies.
Already papers like the 'Wall Street Journal' have shown interest in
starting Indian editions. A large population with a growing middle class
could prove to be an excellent market for potentials.
As far as fears of manipulation of facts and "India's portrayal in the world" goes, after all ours
is a Democracy that believes in the freedom of the Press.
