I really can't believe that an article so candid and honest can actually evoke a critical response as well. It is truly a reflection of how we as Indians learn to find excuses and console ourselves with our own theories rather than facing the hard truth and taking the bull by its horns. I do agree the words of Neena may have been strong but it was still the truth and that as we all know has only one taste – bitter. -

Neena Richards commented on "everything" except the quality of commercials in between while she was watching the show. Also, the best thing is, she linked so many of her observations so easily with the outcome of Oscar that, I should say kudos to her "postmortem analysis" of why Lagaan failed to win an Oscar. Yes, there was a commercial on "Victoria Secrets" in between and possibly, that might have taken Oscar out of Lagaan.
I do not think it is a worth to comment further on somebody's view as silly as "great lobbying, money power and media influence" made "A beautiful mind" to win an Oscar and those who have accepted the award are all dumb because "they can't memorise three lines of an acceptance speech".
Also, she concluded with a consolation to Lagaan team, which is good at heart, but definitely not positive in saying "So, if you ever thought the Oscars are awards for great films you are wrong ".
Randy Newman, who had got nominated for 16 times for "Best Song" category, won his first Oscar this time and he never said that he lost the award for 15 times because "Oscar never goes to a talented person", instead, he said that he is most fortunate to get that. -

I fully agree with the author of the article "Lagaan deserved to lose",
In addition to what Neena had stated I think the following reasons also contributed:
1. It was a movie about the best part of India. It did not show the poverty, the slums, the fighting, the hunger ( and so many other things that are supposedly present in India as per Western nations)
2. The movie was about the triumph of the villagers over British. How could the American media digest this?
3. The other movies had all that the Western countries wanted to see like war, hunger, etc.
So why should we wag our tails in front of bunch of hypocrites who don't want to award a good movie? We have our own viewers and why should we bother about the Western countries ? Indian movies are popular in all the Middle East and the Eastern countries. These Western creatures can't do any harm to us. -

Hats off to the author of the article,"Lagaan deserved to lose", Neena Richards. Not for her writing but for her idea and hope she comes up with more articles like this in the future and also hope that people of the Oscars read this and try getting some sense into their limited minds. -

I am convinced that this Oscar night is a highly overrated event. It is more of a sham and show platform for keeping the glamour/designer industry alive. The Oscars are a scaled up American version of the innumerable (meaningless) film awards we have in the Bollywood. The film industry thrives on stupidity and nonsense, what other way can it find than to keep the industry alive, they institute awards and reward themselves. Your article needs to be applauded. -
