Many people in the US are concerned with apparent trends toward the use of force in settling differences as a matter of US government policy. Alas, it is not something new. Neither is it something new for power to be exercised by those who wield it, usually for worse than better.
Insofar as that goes, the US probably has less to be ashamed for than most. Of course, that's not entirely the point. "Without rightness, there is no greatness." The majority of Americans understand this and will continue to do what they are able to understand what is right and act upon it.
However, to express hope that China assumes the role of the former Soviet Union in restoring the "balance of power" sooner than later brings to mind a couple of sayings often heard in the US. "Be careful what you wish for - you might get it." and "You don't know what you've got 'till it's gone".
As an American and one who shares the world with the rest of humanity, my wish is that enlightenment soon restores the balance, which maintains peace. Promoting conflict, whatever its source, will never achieve that. - Paul Karason
