Should a Business Visit qualify Diplomatic Visa?
Narendra Modi is scaling up the ladder to become an international figure. It is important for him or any of the elected representatives of this Country that we do not enjoy great reputation as a democracy. Indian democracy is susceptible to temptations, shortcuts and misrepresentations. If anyone has to make a judgment about an elected representative in India they will get the apprehensions because the representatives of people sitting in the parliament are not always statesmen as expected in general for such huge democracies. We are finding people with low personal credibility and criminal records. Those who enjoy intellectual reputation or apparently law abiding has to sit in the Rajya Sabha not as true representatives of people. It is an important lesson for Mr Modi. He cannot disregard what has happened in Gujarat over last few years and claim that he is a progressive Chief Minister. The BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) may show full confidence on him. Can he be trusted for any reason? A person who could not stop communal riots, a person who uses offensive language about the Opposition leaders, a person erupts into instantaneous public criticism the moment the visa denied will surely lack credibility in the international eye. I am not advocating that what US did is correct nor am I interested in stating that US is grossly wrong. The international politics should be played with right spirit and understanding. If you are in Opposition and the party in power does not have any respect for you and your leadership, you cannot win the game by making noise in public. Probably this is good time to get into some kind of introspection and make a time bound plan to win the credibility back. BJP as such could show that it has not lost the public support fully as per the results in Bihar and Jharkhand. But the fractured Assembly there shows two things. None of the parties could with the confidence of the people and BJP is not doing anything more than others to go one-step up.
This is a good time for BJP also to take some introspection and correct the historical mistakes they committed to loose the public support. From the US perspective the point is very clear. They disqualified Modi under section 214 (b) of the Immigration and Nationality Act because he was not coming for the purpose that qualified for a diplomatic visa. This cannot be criticized the way Modi did in public. The gesture of applying for diplomatic visa while the visit is for private business meetings may be attracting investments for his State but still cannot be dubbed into as diplomatic reasons and it is not required for any country to respect that.
