Modi Wins... India Loses...
By Vijay Seth
The victory of Narendra Modi and his brand of politics at Gujarat could well be the beginning of a new dimension of politics that the world's largest Democracy will witness in times ahead.
Endorsing 'hindutva' as the road ahead Praveen Togadia of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) said, "Hindutva lab has started functioning in Jaipur as the BJP won all the three seats which went to bypolls in Rajasthan and the final result will come by next Assembly elections in the state due in 2003.
"Minorities should decide themselves how they want to live in India...VHP will not decide their future...it is a question of co-existence in the 'Hindu rashtra'," he added.
A triumphant Modi in a very combative tone said it is a "victory of Gujarat's self-respect", and went on to declare that those forces which had tried to paint a tainted image of the state had been defeated.
Statements like these do no good to a nation like ours. The Togadias and Modis could well dictate a new doctrine scripted by supposedly passionate Indians (read VHP - Bajrang Dal) on how to fight and win elections.
More Godhras. More Ayodhyas. More populist schemes. More cooks in the broth. More spokes in the wheel. This could well be the scene of the future and our leaders would really have no time for governance leading to less if not no economic progress.
The bottom line: India Loses
