Some 30 years back when I was a student, I read about this scheme of linking the rivers of India. The idea of was to pump in lots of funds in the economy for the creation of the infrastructure, to provide lot of irrigation to parched lands and increase agricultural production.
I remember it was the days of American aid under President Kennedy and the benefits envisaged were, cheap inland transport, environmental development
rural development, reducing population shift to urban areas and so on.
Definitely this was mooted during the days of late Pandit Nehru as the Prime Minister. If I remember right it was Dastus & Co, which came out with the preliminary report on it.
If only politicians will let go of their selfish and parochial interests - India has gold in these rivers to feed the billion and provide a more meaningful life to the multitudes.
