For once, explaining victory seemed so difficult!
By Neena Richards

There are many today who will discuss the mathematics of the Gujarat polls, but for a moment let us turn our attention to the spectacular behavior from some of our great leaders.

While the experts and analysts looked dazed and surprised at the overwhelming majority that Modi & Co got at the husting, the most stunned seemed to be the BJP itself. With the writing on the wall so clear, it was only natural for some of them to say, "We always knew we would win this way," but in their own small clusters they would agree the results were beyond their own expectations.

The fiery reactions and tone used by very seasoned and senior leaders of the party were testimony that the results had actually shaken them. Delight came out in the form of anger and aggression. Emotion gave way to rational thinking and they all reacted like high school children do after proving someone wrong.

For once explaining victory seemed so difficult. It also reflected on the reality that BJP has hardly had any success for a couple of years now. Some suddenly realised that it was five years of BJP rule that won them the election but found it taxing to site what they had done in the last five years.

The Congress leaders were not far behind. They kept harping about how one region of Gujarat had turned the tables on them courtesy the riots. One leader even suggested that the riots had been systematically organised in traditional Congress strongholds. His new found theory was as sudden as Archimedes would have shouted Eureka!!!

The media was no different either. They looked so underprepared, kept asking the same questions on riots, polarisation, and Modiism being the future agenda to the extent that a visibly irritated Advani had to tell a scribe "Don’t put words into my mouth."

At the end of it all, what every lip perhaps wanted to tell was they were tired of it all and wanted life to go on. PEACEFULLY.
