Congrats India! The Lord's final would sure stay emblazoned in the memories of every Indian till eternity. 750-odd runs in 100 overs is no joke, but the sad part to the entire episode, which perhaps went a little unnoticed, was the boisterous and animated behaviour of Navjot Singh Sidhu with Sir Geoffrey Boycott.
While most of us, maybe all of us, were still trying to stomach the fact that we had actually made it, Sidhu really went overboard on live television by pointing fingers at Boycott, actually touching him on the shoulder in an intimidating manner, coupled with statements like "you were jumping in your chair" and so on.
While Boycott was actually very cool, calm and making very sensible statements, including praising the Indian selectors, Sidhu just went on and on and on. This really looked stupid and disgraceful.
For a comparison Boycott has played 108 Test matches scored 8,114 runs with 22 centuries while Sidhu has played less than half of that with 51 Tests scoring a paltry 3,202 with just nine centuries. Incidentally, even if you total all runs scored by Sidhu in international cricket (Test plus ODI), it is 500 runs short of what Boycott scored in Test matches alone.
I am drawing this comparison only to highlight the fact that someone like Sir Geoffrey given his contribution to cricket deserves a better treatment. Sidhu, frankly is a nobody in front of Boycott and just because you have an equal opportunity on live television, it does not mean you can behave in such an insipid manner.
While, I think Sidhu should apologise to Boycott on TV, in the long run it would be in the best interest of the concerned TV channels to give Sidhu an eternal break from this profession. "What is man without his mind" said Sidhu, time he figured out where he left his!
It is my request that a proactive portal like yours takes up this issue in the interest of the common man and the grace of the gentleman's game.
