Feedback: Just can't stop comparing

Just 18 inches of rain in New Orleans due to Hurricane Katrina whereas 37.1 inches of rain was reported in Mumbai on July 27. Coming to population of the two cities, New Orleans has a population of 484,674 but in Mumbai it is around 12,622,500.

Deaths in New Orleans within 48 hours of Katrina was recorded to be around 100 but in Mumbai it was just 37. The whole city of New Orleans was evacuated in wake of Katrina while in Mumbai only 10,000 people were evacuated.

Countless cases of shooting and violence in New Orleans whereas not a single case of shooting and violence reported in Mumbai. Time taken for US army to reach New Orleans was 48 hours while the Indian army and navy took just 12 hours to reach Mumbai.

After 48 hours, New Orleans was still waiting for relief, army and electricity but Mumbai was back on its feet and it was business is as usual for Mumbaikars.

But still, USA is known as the world's most developed nation and India as a third world country.

Feedback: USA v/s 'less civilized India'

After this nobody can call India a backward country. Infact our one Mumbai is more than enough for a country like USA atleast in human values.

I am so shocked to see Hurricane Kathrina and more than that how people over there are behaving. It's worse than an African country. Arson, looting, rapes it was all so shocking. Infact, by contrast, I am reminded of Bombay floods a month ago. I have cousins there and almost their entire family was stranded for 2 days, again in similar conditions. One of my cousins was neck deep in water for 8 hours. She was kept alive becoz strangers unknown to her held her hands and formed a que and managed to cross the water in 8 hours. My uncle was offered chai and food by people unknown to him. People opened their bedrooms, drawings, kitchens everything to unknown people stranded by fury of nature and (partially Bombay Municipal Corp) and offered them food and warmth.

Bombay episode was heart warming because it really got the best of people. Some cases I followed. One young guy of 19 years saved around 21 lives in Kailina colony in Mumbai, which was badly flooded. After that he himself died. Star News carried a special report on him.

Preity Zinta, definitely very sexy, was stranded in Juhu and was helped by guys, I repeat guys, from a nearby college.

S.Kulkarnee, LK.Advani's advisor till last month, was stranded for 36 hours. He wrote 2 full pages in Indian Express expressing what a city Bombay was. Taxi-walas ferried people FREE of cost between certain areas. He also mentioned about some Muslim driver who refused to take money for such a humane cause. Local buildings organized langars and community food distribution. The young in the buildings climbed stairs going from house to house (there was no lifts becoz no electricity) and collected food and medicines.

Noteworthy is that not a single incident of arson, loot or rape was reported. There was huge loss or property, entire stocks in shops were lost due to floods, yet there was no looting, arson or murder.

Maybe Bush can import some of the human values from the people of Mumbai.

Feedback: 'Borivali railway station road is a living hell'

Borivali railway station's S V Road near GoraGandhi in Mumbai is a living hell getting worst day by day due to these reasons:

1. Vehicles, rickshaw stand and pedestrians make worst traffic jam everyday. Either nothing can be done about it or is just ignored.

2. Beggars add to this traffic jam. They literally try to snatch money given back by the rickshaw driver while getting off. They are a menace, which is allowed by BMC (Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation).

3. Near the signal there is no place to walk due to the beggars and others who sleep there. Children lie, fight, adults eat, wash same place. Creating hygiene problem and polluting human psyche.

4. In the evening hawkers add to all above. Railway and BMC should not allow them inside railway premises especially outside small ticket window.

Irony is that BMC office is bang opposite the railway station looking at this mess everyday like dumb and deaf. Public will follow but authorities in power have to first build rules. Can BMC, Railways and other organizations concerned take rapid actions on these matters before it goes out of control?

Feedback: Hypocrisy of Sangh Parivar

Dear Sir,
As per media coverage BJP and its Sangh Parivar RSS & VHP were reported making some noises here and there against illegal 3 days State mourning for departed Pope.

Every body pays homage to departed Pope but this State mourning is clearly unconstitutional as India being a secular country has never extended same privilege to prominent leaders of other religions viz of Hindus & Muslims which constitute 98 % of India's population.

But in tune with its traditional hypocrisy BJP and its Sangh Parivar has not prevailed upon its member Mr Bhairon Singh Shekhavat, the Vice President of India, to not head the unconstitutional official Indian Delegation going to Vatican City to attend the funeral of Pope.

In order to protect the Constitution the minimum what Shekhavat may do is to resign his office under protest if UPA Govt insists on sending Shekhavat along with this unconstitutional delegation.

Feedback: Bali temple signs divine / Black Magic?

Police on the Indonesian resort island of Bali are hard-pressed to explain the sudden proliferation of white markings at hundreds of temples across the deeply superstitious Hindu island. Since the island has an estimated 20,000 temples, odalan is one of the most frequently seen ceremonies.

Police spokesman Commissioner Gusti Gde Suryasa said: The people see the phenomenon with a religious perspective. We are looking at it from a judicial point of view. Suspects had yet to be found.

If the one behind all this is not human, then that would be above the range of our duties. Superstition and a strong belief in black magic are deeply ingrained in Bali, which is 90 percent Hindu. Islam predominates throughout most of the Indonesian archipelago.

The first markings were found in two temples in Denpasar, the island's capital, on February 18, and police immediately launched an investigation. But nowadays, these signs are everywhere. Every hour brings new ones. Sometimes they were not there in the morning but suddenly they are there in the evening. And always on temples.

Witnesses have even found the inscriptions on sacred structures in places difficult to reach without the aid of tall ladders. A temple on the grounds of provincial police headquarters, guarded round-the-clock, was not spared. Police laboratory testing on samples of the white substance used in the markings showed that they were made with raw chalk.

Opinions of the residents:
Of course the people are worried. Some believe a catastrophe is imminent. Others think they are positive divine signs.
The warning must be related to the rapid changes taking place in this predominantly Hindu Indonesian island.

Everything is changing. Nothing remains as it was. The weather changes too rapidly. Nature is losing its balance, global warming, a recent series of earthquakes and a deadly tsunami that have hit the country. Nature is unhappy. These signs are there to tell us to be careful in our lives. They remind us to return to the right direction,

One basic principle of Hindu belief is that the universe is structured - things do not happen randomly and it is essential that a balance must be maintained between order and disorder. Spirits are everywhere and ultimately control nature and as such these spirits must be worshipped regularly in order to maintain the balance.

Rituals and festivals are the way the Balinese maintain this order. These festivals have great meaning and are the part of the essence of Balinese culture.

TEMPLE
Almost no day without temple festival that could be possibly seen in the country side of Bali. There are important Hindu public holy days also.

Pusering Jagat : This temple in Pejeng contains several interesting Hindu antiqualies dating from the 14th century, which are now placed in shrines.Reliefs represent a story from the Mahabhrata called the "churning of the ocean" in which Gods and demons seach for the elixir of life.

Balinese people of Hindu belief are typically members of several temple congregations (up to ten and even more), each of which correspond to a given aspect of our social life. There are family and kinship temples, called Sanggah, Merajan, Pur Panti, Pura Dadia, Pura Pemaksan or Pedarman. Others are neighborhood temples or Pur Banjar, yet others are village or public temples such as Pura Desa, Pura Puseh, Pura Dalem (Tri Kahyangan), Pura Sad Kahyangan and many others

Family temples are always built in the north-east of a family's compound and are meant only for use by the members of the family. Resorts and other company buildings host a great number of people from different families and many different religions. Those pursue different activities to achieve the companies' goals, which in turn support the social life of the family members. One could call such a community a family in a wider sense.

Different families can unite here to worship Gods, but not their ancestors. Temple festivals or ceremonies (Odalan) usually take place every 210 days or every lunar year. Festivals, which fall on a particular day, such as Purnima (full moon) or Tilem (dark moon) are celebrated only every 420 days due to lunar rotation. The Inter-Continental Resort Bali's Temple Festival falls on Purnama Karo, the second Purnama of the year. Normally, Gods visit their human worshippers during a temple festival.

There are a great number of religious ceremonies in bali and many are unscheduled. Most of the scheduled ones are temple festivals or ceremonies which Balinese call "O d a l a n"

Feedback: 'Caste structure is splitting Indians'

I am Sudha, a 24-year-old Indian from Dubai. I have chanced to read an article on Indiainfo.com by Mr Shankara Subramaniam about 'adultration' of Indian society because on the caste system.

Mr Subramaniam, please see the amount of violence caused by Muslims in the world. There is a hue and cry when sentiments of Muslims or Christians or Sikhs are hurt. But how many commercials and films depict Brahmins as caricatures. It is the greatness of the Hindu religion, that it has allowed so many religions to co exist in India. It is only because of this great virtue of the Hindu religion that Muslims can build mosques and Christians can build churches in India. I see no mistake in a person standing for his or her own community or caste. If that is wrong, why are the conversions of Hindus into other religions being stooped? Did you ever try to point a finger at all those commercials and films which depict Hindu gods and Goddesses at their will?

The easiest thing for all Indians is to point fingers at Hindus. And it's sad that we Hindus instead of standing against it, become passive spectators.

The caste system in India (or Hinduism) started in an attempt to divide the society on the basis of the work done by each community. If caste system is misused by some politicians, it is their mistake not the mistake of the religion. I am proud to be an Indian and prouder to be a Hindu Brahmin.

This country is on the verge of collapse

There is abolutely no difference between what is happening in Rwanda and in India except the fact that it has a nameplate called democracy. There is no justice and in the the name of minority everything is abused by all politictians. It is sad and what is the point of calling your self great when basic things of freedom is up for SALE in the name of minority. Look at the governments that have been installed in the name of minority support. This is a nation going down under. But outside it looks great and feels great. The fall is going to be steep, like the soviets.

Feedback: Withdrawal tax cannot be termed 'unconstitutional'

The withdrawal tax cannot be termed 'unconstitutional'.Entry 97 of List I of the Seventh Schedule reads as under "Any other matter not enumerated in List II or List III including any tax not mentioned in either of those lists". Thus, the tax is well within Parliament's Legislative Competence. This tax has a number of merits-Simplicity,low compliance effort and cost for tax payers-i.e.no need to file returns, no registration, wide tax base and elasticity-growth potential in a growing economy.

The Honourable FM is right in his concern regarding cash withdrawals becoming part of the black economy. For example i Pay cash of Rs.25,000 by withdrawing from my bank account to a contractor for carrying out work in my house.Although my cash is out of white money, but the other party does not show it in his accounts and tax returns. This has led to a loss of Income Tax for Govt. at the first stage itself. How much more revenue the Govt.will lose in further circulation of this money. We owe a patriotic duty to our country to transact in cheque and help curb tax evasion.

Having said this, three issues need to be seriously considered:
1)The banks should be given a commission on the amounts collected, say 1% to compensate them for their efforts.
2)This tax be extended to cash withdrawals from Post Office Savings, Account too.
3)This tax does not apply to Jammu and Kashmir. What makes the FM think that the problem of black money does not exist in the fairyland of J&K.The banks there will be plush with accounts having laundered money of terrorists. A terrorist withdrawing Rs.1,00,000 from Srinagar pays no tax.But if i withdraw in Delhi rS.10001, i PAY rS.10 TAX.hE SHOULD EXTEND THE TAX TO J&K AND STOP DISCRIMINATING BETWEEN j&k and rest of India.

Feedback: Paswan & Lalu both disobeyed their supremo Sonia!

Paswan refused Sonia to compromise with RJD in the name of 'Seculrism'. Lalu did not attend UPA meeting called by Sonia.

Are'nt the 4 Muslim MLAs (JD-U), not secular?

Does fighting between Paswan, Bihar Congress and Lalu show secularism of power hunger? Lalu's refusal to bow to Mr Paswan's demand for a Muslim chief minister may serve to "expose" his secular credentials. If Laloo Prasad Yadav is so concerned about keeping the communal forces at bay", an irate member apparently told, "let him support an LJP-led government."

Are criminals such as Rama Singh, Manoranjan Singh alias Dhumal Singh, Munna Shukla, Govindganj and Shanker Singh of LJP, Aditya Singh (Congress), Surendra Yadav, RJD and Amrendra Pandey BSP, secular? Now Secular Shahabuddin & Co. of RJD and bahubalis of LJP are keeping their guns towards each other for horse trading.

Among 29 Muslim candidates of LJP, not a single won. Even then Paswan want to appease Muslims. Paswan's MLAs want tieup with BJP, but he says no.

Paswan wants to be Mayavati of Bihar. Kansiram & Mayavati always said that they want election again and again. Mayawati played game in Uttar Pradesh but suffered due to her numerous flirtations with the BJP. Minorities gravitated to the Samajwadi Party. Paswan is playing same game in Bihar.

Paswan becomes Mungeri to think that links with the BJP, directly or indirectly, for short term advantage would permanently impair his long-term political ambitions in the state.

In near future minimum 22 his MLAs will go with NDA. Most of the MLAs in his LJP are from upper castes who may try to foil his gameplan. Whether Mr Paswan will be able to hold on to them for long is the moot question.

As many as 17 of the LJP's MLAs are Bhumihars or Rajputs, five are Yadavs and three Paswans. Kurmis, Koeris and other castes make up the rest..

Bhumihars or 'rajputs are voters of NDA & Congress. They came with Paswan to defeat Lalu. If NDA trough Nitish became Kalidas to accept Paswan as CM. Upper cast including Brahmins and Rajputs thought that then why not they should vote possible CM Paswan instead of NDA. In the last NDA tried to distance itself from Paswan. NDA lost golden chance to be late.

Politics of Paswan and Congress have not really been without instances of questionable opportunism. From 1996, Paswan had not been out of power till the Godhra violence in 2002. His journey from the non-BJP, non-Congress Third Front to the BJP-led NDA was not really one that underlined ideological commitment. Congress excepat NDA's five year term and before this for a short period Cpmgress remain out of power. Like this Late Rao belongs to out of Nehru-Gandhi dynasty, was the only PM for full terms of five years.

Congratulations to Star campaigner Sonia Gandhi for securing a "massive mandate" (Sonia's words) of 10 seats out of 243 in Bihar, with open alliance wtih Paswan, and a secret alliance with Laloo, with her 'Renounce'. Was her efforts in Bihar to unite so called secular forces?

Before President rule Paswan wants to remove Governor Buta Singh. The RJD gameplan, therefore, is quickly veering round to President's rule, followed by an election after six months or a year. Laloo Prasad is clearly convinced he will be able to regain the support of Muslims and Yadavs during this period. With just 10 MLAs, Congress, it appears, would either like a Congress-led government or President's rule.

UPA, Lok Sabha Speaker, Lalu anger on Election Commission! They opened the mouth of their guns towards Election Commission. Now as former Election commissioner, presnent EC would not be Rajya Sabha member from Congress.

On March 1, UPA opposes EC. Angered by his party's dismal performance at the hustings, RJD president Lalu Prasad today sought to put the blame on the Election Commission accusing it of having subverted the democratic process. Know our Lok Sabha Speaker comrade Somnath da.

West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadev Bhattacharjee on Feb 26 invited naxalites operating in West Midnapore, Purulia and Bankura districts for talks and negotiations to redress their grievances. In the same time in Lok Sabha comrade Somnath Chatterjee as Lok Sabha Speaker said, "Who is a criminal and who is not? Are the Naxalites criminals? "Further Lok Sabha Speaker termed as "unfortunate" the externment of four MPs from their respective constituencies in Bihar during the assembly polls.

Comrade Sumnath defames court because matter is now in the court. Tomorrow Speaker will say that sending jail to the MPs on order of a court is also undemocratic.

Feedback: How Hindus can stop politicians taking over temples!

What an excellent article! As long as Hindus are divided on Caste, Creed and language, India will disintigrate fast. There will be more Partitions, not one. In this global age, Money is the Means. Hurt the politicians where it counts. Stop contributing to temples. Instead, use that money to directly build new temples, Free food for poor inside temples at the time of festivals, free education for poor, free vedic education for Dalit children etc. Don't put your money in Temple Hundis.

Raghavendra Prasad

Feedback: How Hindus can stop politicians taking over temples!

I think Mr Shah has made a valid point about Hindus giving charity directly rather than thro' a temple or mutt. This has also the advantage of ensuring that religious devotion does not result in concentration of power in the hands of whoever is controlling the temple or mutt.

As for the mode of giving charity I have been advocating for some time that every Hindu must contribute 1% of his income to one or more charitable trusts which provide food and shelter to anyone who is in need. This has also the advantage of preventing politicians from ruining the country further in the name of poverty alleviation.

As for using voting power I am afraid BJP would have to reinvent itself to become acceptable to a larger proportion of Hindus. Right now it has the image of an upper caste party unmindful of the socio-economic conditions of the lower classes of people. An occasional electoral understanding with a Mayavati or Paswan does not exactly erase this impression. On the other hand, the compromises made in such electoral understandings lowers its image. If a majority of Hindus stand for one thing it is the protection of dharma founded on the principles of tapah, saucham, daya, satyam. Any political party not adhering to these principles can never command their loyalty.

Feedback: Australian Open: Sania Mirza goes down to Serena

Sania has made us Indians proud to say that we too have such great youngsters on roll right at the moment. I could watch her only match with Serena, where I felt that she was much stronger n perfect in forehand and baseline shots. The way she keeps on the volley rolling just shows her determination to win every moment.

Good going girl, India believes in you. Now that you have made us proud just by being there n starting a good show, i am pretty sure that you will continue making us proud throughout your sports career.

And most important, she should try being a good human being even after her popularity because thats the only way she can bring love and respect to herself apart from the professional success.

Wish Sania my best wishes 4 all her future endeavours and may she bring great name to India.

Though it sounds logical to simply say that a saint is supposed to be ascetic and so the efforts of Kanchi Swamy to spread the mutt and the religion he believed are unsaintly acts. The important aspect of Sankaracharya tradition is spreading of the religion and not complete spiritual message to emancipate the ordinary human soul from this material world.
From this perspective the efforts of Kanchi Swamy to spread his religion should be supported by religious believers.
There is an amount of confusion in judging the missionaries and spiritual gurus. Spiritual gurus are those who just focus on humanity irrespective of religion and teach humanity about the spiritual experiences and drives them towards such feelings irrespective of the religion they were born or followed.
The missionaries on the other part are vested with the focus of spreading the religion and keep the religious faith intact. Also it is idealistic to say that people following him should vouch for him and die for him. Does this happend for anybody in the history of mankind? Can someone remember the story of Jesus Christ? When he was on the cross how many of his followers came forward? Isnt this the same case? Human beings are selfish and they cannot leave the human behaviour just because they follow a spiritual guru.
Third important aspect is, when there is big money, big fame lot of things can come in and accusations against swamy can be one. Until proved, we cannot assume that swamy is a culprit and make our judgements.
All of us, writing for and against kanchi swamy are forgetting an important aspect. We are not writing about people like Abu Salem, Chandraswamy or even a petty Rowdy sheeter or a mafia don round the corner because we fear retaliation from them but we do not have any such fears about Kanchi Swamy.
Lets first stop seeing the right pictures and react normally.

This is another lie in a long string of untruths that Mr. Rakesh continues to tell about his the misfortunes of his company. TWS has very few clients and is losing the few that they have. There is no expansion and no growing client list. The divestiture is a retreat towards bankruptcy.

Mr. Rakesh is the worst type of corporate offender - the type that runs a company into the ground with a handicapped strategy and executive team, while sourcing venture capital with an endless string of bold faced lies.

Hello sir,
I happened to stumble upon the article on the petrol pump scam.
I would like to inform to you that I have been fighting a case against the wrongful alottment of a Petrol Pump since more than a year now.
This said dealership is located at panvel-Matheran road & teh one of the basic eligibility criteria for the accpication was that the candidate should be a resident of Dist. Raigad.
This dealership was alotted under political influence to Mr. Suryakant Jagtap who is the secretary of BJP in mumbai.
The alottee has been born & broughtup in mumbai & has no connections with dist. raigad.
Only due to his proximity to ex. minister of petroleum, Mr. Ram Naik, has he been alotted this petrol pump.
I have already furnished the details & proofs of Mr. jagtap being a non raigad resident to the Honourable High Court & I am awaiting the court order scheduled tommorrow [ 8th december 2:30 pm ] at the special magistrate's court.

This is a total disgrace in the Indian history. I am not blaming the TN police or Shankaracharya because we don't know the truth yet. For one thing is clear, Shankaracharya should not be treated as god or whatever it is, just because of the name. I have great respect for one's efforts in this direction and the arrested Shankaracharya could be innocent but he is not beyond the law of the land. This is just because he is not yet a True Shankaracharya....he is just like you and me.
I am a follower of the great Shankaracharya who was born in 5 AD. India is fortuante in having those people who were born in that soil. There are few people or probably we can count them on our finger tips who understood the great Shankaracharya of the past. Attaining the highest in spiritual life is what Shankaracharya is.
He is like Buddha or Ramakrishna or Vivekananda or Kabir or Meera. Just by keeping the name of Shankaracharya one does not become a Shankaracharya. It is actually a deceit for the public. It is like keeping Gandhi as last name in India.
It is like the bramhins ( I am a bramhin myself ) who call themselves as Bramhins. One who can understand this great nature ( Brahma ) is a Bramhin. bramhins who call themselves as Brahmins are just deceiving themselves and are the biggest idiots....I take this as an oppurtunity because by birth I am a bramhin. Our whole problem of stupid religious division can be solved if people can understand this.
So let us not forget this. India's importance in the world lies in its spirituality and definitely not on other merits. Let us not deviate from the truth and be emotional with religion etc. Let us treat this as an ordinary case and see what the truth is. We have all seen the Buddhas who were born in India in the past who were more simpler than common man.
They had ultimate respect for an individual and his spiritual growth. If TN Police are at fault, all the people in the chain of responsibility from Sub -Inspector to the minister should all resign. If the Shankaracharya is at mistake, it is high time we all should wake up and recognise this stupidity of how the religious people play in our lives.

I dont think India is going to be affected by the entry of South Africa in the BPO framework. India has enjoyed by far the highest number of international companies not only from UK but also from many other countries. Some of the big players are here for almost more than a decade now and even the call rates might not affect as it is not the costs that matter it is the customer satisfaction that matters and I think that South Africa might not be able to do that as effeciently and as proffesionally as India does it. South Africa may as well become a very good destination for many companies but it isn't going to challenge India by any means.

Queen Aishwarya's forehead was shot off: report
There seems to be some other face to these killings. The reasons are as following: 1.The king prince Birendra is siad to be in drunken state and he is hardly able to stand on his own. 2.If he is under influence of alchohol, how he could able to shoot his 8/9 family members so precisely that nobody survived? 3. The simple thing comes to anybody's mind that when he first shot his father or mother what others are doing? if not they try to catch the drunken, they can even fled the scene and save their lives. 4.Importantly,there are no servants inside the palace? I don't think the worker community will stay away from the crime scene when their feeding hand is under attack, unless they were stopped by somebody!! 5.And there is no surprise to hear that Birendra himself committed suicide.(whether he did it or not in any case he will also not be spared if conspiracy is involved)

Police step up probe; question Kanchi Mutt officials
The unbiased attitude of Tamil Nadu Government and it's Police Department is certainly to be acknowledged by every neutral citizen. Unequivocally the credit goes to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Hon. Jayalalitha. Whether the issue is related to Sandal Wood Smuggler or Sankar Mutt Saint her vision seems indiscriminatory. The murder can't be transformed as holy thing when it involved with people from holy place. True consideration should be given while dealing with these types of cases by not giving language or religious sentiments to play. The Law and Order enforcement wing has got the full right to arrest and investigate anyone under suspicious condition. And anyone who was arrested under such condition will be released if the crime is not proved. Tamil Nadu is becoming a model state in India. So the public should allow the Government machineries to function freely in the process of weeding out.

Hi
Being loyal to RSS looks like being shameful to your identity. So any polititian - even advani or Bajpaiji - will not belong to the org fromwhere they hve come up. Now it is the majic of only chair. They belong only to it - the chair ! It is very true that the Indian politics will never be clean and India will never be on top of world if RSS is looked away from! The achieveemnt may be however big otherway but they will lack in spirit as they take help of principleless people to stick to the chair. Recent poll results of Mah as best example of it as makinf colobration with party like shivsena! best luck Advaniji to bring up BJP again on top - try and avoid other prinipleless people and party!

Sonia's sacrifice is revered in Pakistan too!
Sonia didn't sacrifice anything. She couldn't opt for Priministetship because Congress didn't get absolute majority. As usual Congress depends on so many small indifferent parties. The fact that Congress didn'g get absolute majority is a clear indication that Indian people didn't like foreigner to rule India. Except the qualification that she is Mr.Rajiv's wife nothingelse she has either good back ground in education, politics etc.

Tamil to be declared a 'classical' language
Salute to Indian Government for crowning Tamil language:
The executive committee of Victorian Tamil Cultural Association is saluting the Indian Government for having declared Tamil as classical language on 17th September,2004 during the parliament session. Tamil is not only the oldest Dravidian language but also the indigenous and independent language of Indian sub-cotinent and thus well fit into the newly formulated category as the first classical language of India.
Tamil is being offered for studies in many universities around the world for its classical nature. During 2000, the Professor Dr. Hart of University of California, Berkeley in the United States, a Tamil scholar by himself, had sent a statement to the Indian Government detailing about the classical status of Tamil language.
Many Tamil scholars, Tamil leaders, political parties and organisations were constantly demanding the successive Indian Government since so many years. Finally the tireless efforts of Tamils fetched the fruitful result by fulfilling the long standing aspirations of them to see their language honoured as classical language.
On this happiest moment, I express numerous thanks on behalf of our Association to the Indian Government. Our special thanks to Indian President Hon. Dr. Abdul Kalaam, Prime Minister Hon. Manmohan Singh, Congress Party President Mrs. Sonia Gandhi and all Tamil scholars like Hon. Dr. M. Karunanidhi, Tamil leaders, and political parties and various organisations which took part in attaining this victory.

There should be no question as to whether or not Gurkhas are allowed to stay here if they wish. We should welcome them with open arms and be proud to help them. God knows they have been helping us for centuries, any old soldier will tell you of their bravery and courage. We let them die for us and then say they cannot live here. That's rich we open our arms to thousands of others who promptly plot against us when they get here. How dare we make them go through the indignity of the asylum process. Most British people would be proud to welcome them to live in our country.

The two sides of Freedom in America as seen by me
I'm not sure where the author of this article attended school in the USA, but her experiences there are certainly not indicative of the country as a whole.

When I read it I am reminded of friends who have visited a USA/ Mexico border town and then come back and describe Mexico based of their experiences there which is totally off base from the true Mexico once you get past the border.

I feel compelled to address three statements tha author has made in the article. First the reference that children "get on their own early, they never have the "Indian" attachment towards their parents and/or relatives. People have a hard life, particularly in their old age, when they need their near-and-dear-ones alongside."

I have no idea where this comes from. Children gradute from high school at age 18. They are with their parents until that age. Some still live at home and attend college after this. Others go to college elsewhere but visit home on weekends. We are veryy attached to our parents and take very good care of them until they pass on.

Second, the statement that "For girls, sex is just an "experience"; something they want to experiment with different people, in different forms, throughout their life." Maybe for the crwod the author chose for friends while here. I question the author's friend picking ability. This is a gereralization that simply stated, is not the norm of most American females.

Third, the statement that "Marriage has become practically a "joke" there. People divorce and remarry for petty things. The culture of single-parents has crept in steadily and comprehensively." There is more truth in this than the other. America has a high divorce rate. However again this is a generalization that just isn't true as a whole.

Even though the author probably does the same religious views as most Americans I would invite the author to visit and socialize with an American church upon the next visit and get to know and become friends with people in an organize religious setting here before writing such a generalized and skewed article of the USA. It is this type of journalism that cause false concepts of countries around the world and should be guarded against. The editor of this paper should make sure the journalist have their facts in line before publication.

Not Rana Pratap, Shivaji was his model, Mr Aiyar
Very apt and true. I really like Indiainfo because they are not blinded by pseudo-secularism followed by the Congress et al and you understand the true perspective and nature of any argument.

I am a patriot, but I still say India has a long way to go before we can say we are really secular. The brand of "secularism" followed now is nothing but Anti-Hinduism. Say anything against Hinduism, do anything to Hindus... and we are supposed to just sit back and do nothing, just to prove how "secular" we are. But if the same thing were done to a Muslim, there is furore everywhere. This is because the Muslim Community is united and Hindus as usual are not.

This backbiting attitude and going against one's own people was responsible for India's colonization by the British, and this very thing is going to lead us to an Italian colonization now, albeit in a different form. What does Sonia know about patriotism and enduring torture for the sake of India? What right does Mrs. Gandhi have to oppose Savarkar's portrait in the Parliament and talk about patriotism towards India when she accepted the nationality of India only when Rajiv Gandhi was about to become the Prime Minister, more than 15 years after marriage. It really hurts me and other like-minded people to see so much importance given to a foreigner, while true nation builders are maligned.

This is the cause of India's problems. And speaking of Secularism, where were these so-called "Secularists" when hundreds of temples in Kashmir were demolished? Where were the "Secularists" when a fatwa was announced against Kashmiri Pandits and they were told to leave their homes, their lands, their whole life as they knew it within 24 hours? Let me make a note here that Balasaheb Thakarey, who you people consider "Unsecular" was the first person to think of the plight of Kashmiri students and reserve a certain percentage of seats in all fields of education for them.Where were these "Secularists" when terrorists attacked Hindu marriages, killing the groom and all men and raping the women?

No, they were not saying a single word at that time because they wanted to prove how "Secular" they were. They only protested when one masjid was demolished (and it has been proved that it was a Hindu religious site first). They only protested when Ishrat, a supposedly innocent teenager was killed in an encounter. Even our Central Ministers attended her funeral procession. I ask these people, where were you when it was later proved that Ishrat was indeed a terrorist?

Even the Godhra riots have been made such an issue. What happened was bad, but who started all that? Who set fire to a compartment consisting mostly Hindu women and children, in the quiet of the night?

But then, I raise these issues because I do not have any vested interests. I do not have to play vote-bank politics. In other words, I am not "Secular" as defined by the Congressmen and their various satellite parties. I am not secular because I do not go around insulting and demeaning the tenets of Hinduism.

Yes, I have Muslim friends, some of them so close that they are like siblings, but what does that matter? I do visit a Muslim couple, (who are closer to me than my own uncles and aunts) on Eid and otherwise, but hey, that is not "Secularism" in the books of the Congress. I am not Secular because I do not eat Non-Veg., I do the pooja regularly, I put bindis often. So what if I really uphold the teachings of the Koran and believe that all religions essentially tell the same thing. In short, I am NOT SECULAR, because I do not follow or appreciate people like Mr. Aiyyar, Laloo Prasad Yadav, Mr. Mulayam Singh Yadav, etc. who would rather side with Pakistani terrorists than support Hindus. I am NOT SECULAR because I idolise people like Shivaji, Savarkar, Bhagat Singh, Madan Lal Dhingra, Subhash Chandra Bose, Lala Lajpat Rai and not Nehru, Gandhi and others for whom, jail was just a place for rest and recuperation.

All said and done, in today's India I am not a secular person and hence I am not an ideal citizen of the nation. Sad... but true.

I feel like being Hindu in a Hindu Majority country is humiliating. Why hindus have to pay money for Muslims to do Haj. This can only happen in India and to Indians(Who are majority Hindu now but 50 years down the line that won't be true either). Wake up Hindus and oust this Muslim Congress league.

BJP to go with UPA to bar tainted persons: Vajpayee
There should be law for election rules, that any person having a court case pending against him of any sort and also in case of case by him against any body - should not be eligible to contest election.
This should be applicable to all election - Lok sabha, state assembly, corporation and even gram panchayat! This only can bring real peace and prosperity in India ! !
