The BJP-led NDA government faces an acid test following the outbreak of communal riots in Gujarat. The attack on Sabarmati Express carrying 'Ram sevaks' among others sparked off the riots, which the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) claims is an act to thwart its plans to build Ram Temple in Ayodhya.

The issue of building the temple by VHP at the disputed Ayodhya site has been a bone of contention since the 1990s. Though VHP fixed March 15 as its deadline to commence work on the temple, it assured the Centre that the Ides of March would not be another 'black' December 6.

Prime Minister Vajpayee, however, has stated that any decision on the temple should depend on the Supreme Court verdict. Notwithstanding the PM's statements, the VHP began its confrontationist preparations leading to the Godhara train attack and the subsequent carnage.

The protest against the Sabarmati Express attack on February 27 has left Gujarat burning with over 250 lives lost (though unofficial sources put the toll as much higher). The gravity of the situation forced Vajpayee to cancel his proposed visit to Australia to attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting.

All eyes are now focussed on how the situation would develop with the Army being called in Gujarat to help maintain peace. The tensions could well spill over to the rest of the country causing unnecessary tensions and anxiety during the examination season.

The Centre will be stable
