Curfew lifted in Mandya, prohibitory orders remain
Saturday, November 2 2002 12:49 Hrs (IST)

Mandya: Curfew imposed in Mandya and in four other towns of Mandya district in the wake of intensified agitation by farmers against release of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu was lifted on November 2 morning, police said.

Prohibitory orders under Section 144 would however be in place till November 15, the date to which the Supreme Court on November 1 adjourned the case on contempt of court petitions against Karnataka Chief Minister S M Krishna and others.

Curfew was imposed on October 30 for three days after angry farmers went on the rampage and attacked the police following resumption of the agitation a day after the state Council of Ministers decided to release water to comply with the Supreme Court order.

A strong police force aided by the Rapid Action Force (RAF) and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) are keeping a close vigil on the situation.

Railway authorities have announced suspension of train services on November 2 also.
