Panel to evolve distress-sharing formula on Cauvery
Monday, June 9 2003 18:49 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: A high-level technical committee was constituted on June 9 to evolve a "distress-sharing formula" among the Cauvery river basin states.

The committee, headed by R K Sharma, commissioner (projects) in the Union Water Resources Ministry, has been asked to "come out with a suitable formula very soon", water resources secretary A K Goswami said.

He was briefing reporters after a two-hour long 17th meeting of the Cauvery Monitoring Committee (CMC) in New Delhi, which was attended by senior officials from Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Pondicherry.

Goswami said the technical committee, which would have technical representatives from these states as members, would meet in a "couple of weeks' time". The panel would submit its report to the CMC for its approval, he said.
