Rajni to lead delegation to PM on Cauvery issue
Sunday, October 13 2002 19:58 Hrs (IST)

Chennai: Tamil film superstar Rajnikant on October 13 said that he would lead a delegation of film personalities to meet Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee and request him to prevail upon Karnataka to implement the Supreme Court order to release 9000 CUSECS of Cauvery water daily to Tamil Nadu.

He told reporters after submitting a petition to Governor P S Ramamohan Rao that he was also trying to contact some of his friends from the Kannada film world to ask them to come along with him.

Stating that the trip was only a temporary solution to the vexed issue, he said a permanent solution lay in linking the Ganges with the Cauvery. "The Centre should implement the scheme, unmindful of the cost of the project," he said.

"Let the government not worry about the cost. We will raise the funds," he said, adding that people would voluntarily contribute their mite for its implementation.

"It will be a golden era for India if the project is implemented. We will be like USA or Switzerland," he said.

If there were problems in implementing it, at least the South Indian rivers should be linked. "Let the Centre announce that project. I am willing to personally offer Rs 1 crore towards the project," he said.
