New Delhi: The Centre is considering convening a meeting of the Cauvery River
Authority (CRA) on November 29 in yet another attempt to resolve the row over
sharing of water between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.
Besides Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee, the other members of the CRA are Chief
Ministers of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Pondicherry.
Water Resources Ministry sources said that ahead of the CRA meeting, the official-
level meeting of the Cauvery Monitoring Committee (CMC) is also likely to be held on
November 25.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa had early this week withdrew her critical
remarks she had made against the Prime Minister in the context of the Cauvery
dispute following strong resentment by the Supreme Court.
In a letter to Vajpayee, Jayalalithaa said that she had no intention to insinuate
him or the CRA and her remarks were only intended to improve the conditions of the
farmers of Tamil Nadu when she had written the letter to the Prime Minister earlier
this month.
The CMC had met last in Chennai on October 2 after visiting the reservoirs in
Karnataka and Mettur in Tamil Nadu and claimed that the issues relating to the
sharing of waters had been "sorted" out.
