Angry farmers ransack Cong MLA's house in Mandya
Tuesday, October 29 2002 21:53 Hrs (IST)

Mandya: Angry farmers on October 29 stormed the house of a ruling Congress member of legislative assembly (MLA) and ransacked his house at Panadavapura in Mandya district as they stepped up the agitation announcing an indefinite bandh in Mandya district from October 30 to protest release of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu.

A group of about 100 frenzied farmers stormed the house of legislator Kempegowda and smashed the TV, furniture, windowpanes and several articles but he was away when the incident happened, police said. None of the inmates were injured.

After the attack on the MLA's house, they also looted a shop and pelted stones at the State Bank of Mysore branch nearby. The car of a district co-operative bank president Annegowda was also stoned, police said.

Kempegowda had issued a statement two days back justifying the action of Krishna in releasing water, which, reports said, had angered the farmers.

The rail and road traffic between Bangalore and Mysore remained paralysed for the second day on October 29, two days after the agitation was resumed by the Mandya district farmers protection committee following the government's decision to release water.
