Wednesday, October 30 2002 13:37 Hrs (IST)

Bangalore: Congress Member of Parliament (MP) Ambareesh on October 30 said that he has decided to resign his Lok Sabha membership on the Cauvery issue.

He told reporters that he would submit his resignation to Congress president Sonia Gandhi with a request to her to forward it to the Lok Sabha Speaker Manohar Joshi.

Ambareesh, elected from Mandya, said that he would not find fault with the decision to release water to Tamil Nadu but decided to quit to keep his word to the people of the district that he would resign Lok Sabha membership in the event of water release.

Actor-turned-politician Ambareesh said he met Chief Minister S M Krishna and informed him of his decision.

He said the Mandya district MLAs called on him and tried to persuade him not to resign. Mandya district legislators need not quit their membership, he said.
