TRS to join Congress Government in AP on June 23
Saturday, June 19 2004 12:11 Hrs (IST)

Hyderabad: Andhra Pradesh will have its first coalition Government when Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), a pre-poll ally of Congress, joins the ministry headed by Y S Rajasekhar Reddy on June 23.

Six TRS representatives will be inducted into the cabinet, Reddy told reporters today (June 19, 2004).

The TRS-specific cabinet expansion, which was originally scheduled for June 21, was delayed apparently due to some hard bargaining by the sub-regional party in terms of the choice of portfolios.

While earlier reports had said TRS would be given seven posts-- six cabinet and a minister of state rank,-- the Chief Minister confirmed that an agreement has been reached on inducting six members into his cabinet.

The Congress sources said the TRS had sought plum portfolios like excise, power, transport and medical and health, a demand, which did not find favour with the Chief Minister. However, the matter has been sorted out to the satisfaction of both sides, sources said.

The TRS, making its electoral debut, had won 26 Assembly and five Lok Sabha seats. The TRS founder-president K Chandrasekhar Rao and another senior leader A Narendra have already been accommodated in the Union cabinet.

Meanwhile, a section of Congressmen from Telangana region are peeved over the growing clout of TRS and the way it was able to garner plum posts by flaunting its rapport with Congress high command.
