Tidal Waves hit South Asia

A car submerged in the sea near ChennaiDecember 26, 2004, the day after Christmas, the world woke for a startling news of a major earthquake on the Indian Ocean shorelines.

The tragedy, one of the worst in over forty years, was triggered by a massive earthquake epicentred in Sumatra island and measuring 8.9 on the Richter Scale.

The worst-affected countries included Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Southern parts of India, Thailand, Phillipines, Malaysia and Maldives.

The Indian States of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala were the worst-hit.

The quake-triggered tidal waves, which are called Tsunamis, are known to travel at 500-750 miles per hour causing extensive damage gulping everything on the way.
