Bangalore: A day after Karnataka government announced a judicial probe into the
killing of Janata Dal-United (JD-U) leader H Nagappa, his family on December 17 met
Governor T N Chaturvedi and sought his intervention for a Central Bureau of
Investigation (CBI) probe into his death and asked for police protection.
Nagappa's son-in-law Dr Kiran Patel who, along with the JD-U leader's son Preethan
and JD-U leader in the Assembly P G R Sindhia met the Governor, said they told
Chaturvedi that "a grave injustice" had happened and a CBI probe would help to get
to the "bottom of the truth".
The Governor, Patel said, assured them that he would take up the matter with the
concerned authorities.
The Nagappa family also met Director General of Police (DGP) T Madiyal and sought
police protection, he said.
Patel said they had been receiving "unpleasant calls" and they feared that "those
who killed Nagappa" might harm them. "At any cost, we will go ahead in the matter,"
he said.
The DGP, he said, had assured that police protection would be provided to the
Nagappa family.
Karnataka Cabinet on December 16 had decided to hold a judicial probe either by a
sitting or retired High Court judge into the mystery surrounding the death of
Nagappa, whose decomposed body was recovered in the Chengadi forests on December 8,
with different theories floating around on the circumstances of his death.
