The meet that was supposed to bridge the broad and varied differences
between the rich and the poor, unfortunately, only served to widen the
existing gulf. In a way, the WTO Ministerial Conference in Cancun was doomed
to collapse, as it was shrouded in controversy long before the meet actually
opened. The developing countries led by India and Brazil locked horns with
the US and the EU over the issues of farm subsidy, market access and export
credits, not to mention the contentious Singapore issues. With both sides
refusing to budge from their stated positions, the debate ended in a
deadlock and without a declaration. Here's a compilation of the proceedings
in relation to the WTO Ministerial.
